Lola Dirkx

Place 14 - Brussels Parliament

priority #1:

A single Brussels instead of 19…. That would almost seem to good to be true but I hope to be able still to contribute to making this dream a reality. The resources that would be saved as a result and that would legitimately flow back to the city will have to be fully dedicated to ensuring that our beautiful city can face up to the future and to achieving equal opportunities for each and every one of its inhabitants.

Lola Dirkx works in the cabinet of the Echevine Ans Persoons in the City of Brussels. She is a true Brusseleir and passionate about her city. She would like to see a single and colourful Brussels, both at the level of the Region and the Community. And Brussels means thinking about Brussels for Brussels and that means none of the polarisation and division between communities of yesteryear. That also and logically applies for cultural subsidies and the Brussels education system.

On a daily basis, Lola is committed to a kind of urban development that is suited to the needs of inhabitants and not to the needs of big money, cronyism or tourists. She wants to improve the quality of public areas by giving priority to real neighbourhoods and by fighting to stop buildings being left vacant. Temporary occupation of buildings must have an element of longer term planning and, in a more general way, citizens’ initiatives must be supervised in a better way. The enthusiasm of citizens’ movements is too often nipped in the bud due to the lack of transparency in the political system in Brussels. So she is calling for local offices that can support and inform such movements.

Lola likes plants, music and walks. She is proud of the atmosphere at night in Brussels. Our city is teeming with talented artists and musicians who are short of places in which to express themselves. She would like to create the post of regional mayor for night life to promote dialogue and highlight these cultural riches. But it is also about urban planning. For example, why isn’t there a nightclub in the Gare du Nord neigbourhood, which is empty after 5pm?

A single Brussels instead of 19 versions of Brussels – that seems too good to be true. But she hopes that she can still contribute to that. The sums of money that would be saved as a result of that and would legitimately come back to the city would have to be fully reinvested so that our beautiful city can calmly face up to the future and ensure equal opportunity for all its inhabitants.
